Design Before Anything Gets Framed

Design is where a sauna is won or lost. Before any wood is ordered we measure the space, work out what the room can physically carry, and draw it: bench heights against your ceiling, the vent path, where the heater sits and what it has to be rated for, how the door swings, what you see when you sit down. You get a plan you can hold rather than a verbal promise, and a spec sheet listing wood species, heater model, control, glass and lighting. Some clients take the design straight into a custom sauna build with us. Others want the drawings to hand to their own contractor or to price honestly against another bid, which we are glad to do.

Why Design With Us

We design as builders, and everything we draw we also build, from a plain sauna installation to a hotel wellness suite, so nothing in the drawing set is a detail somebody else has to solve on site. Every dimension has been cut before, every heater on the spec sheet has been wired by our crew, and the vent placement comes from opening up rooms that failed as much as from ones that worked.

  • Measured site survey, not a sketch from photos.
  • Heater and control specified against calculated volume and glass area.
  • Drawings detailed enough for a permit submission.
  • Wood, bench, door and lighting samples brought to you.
  • Design fee credited against the build if you go ahead with us.

Reasons to Start With a Design

Design work pays for itself when:

You are comparing quotes

Two bids for a sauna are almost never for the same room. A drawn plan and spec sheet turn them into a comparison you can actually make, usually revealing where the cheaper one saved money.

The remodel is already underway

If a bath, basement or pool house is open to the studs, the sauna should be designed now and built into that sequence rather than added back later at twice the disruption.

You need it to clear planning

Outdoor structures, setbacks, coastal review and any commercial sauna all want drawings. We produce a set that the City of San Luis Obispo or county planning will accept rather than one that starts a round of questions.

The budget needs shaping

Design is where you find out that dropping from a glass wall to a glass door lets you afford clear cedar, or that moving the room six feet saves a long circuit run. Those trades are cheap on paper and expensive in framing.

You want to build it yourself

Some clients do their own carpentry and want the engineering settled. We will design the room, spec the heater and venting, and leave you a build sequence to follow.

How We Work

From the first drawing to the first steam, one builder runs your project.

1. Measure and interview

We survey the space properly, check panel capacity and access, and talk through how you want to use the room: how many people, how hot, how humid, morning or evening, alone or with company. That conversation drives more of the design than the square footage does.

2. Draw and spec

You get a plan and elevations, a bench and vent layout, and a written spec listing wood species, heater output and model, controls, glass, lighting and accessories. Anything unresolved is flagged rather than glossed over.

3. Revise and cost

We revise until it is right, then price it flat-rate. If you build with us the design fee comes off the build; if you do not, the drawings are yours to use.

What the Drawing Set Covers

A finished design package includes:

Plan and elevations

Dimensioned layout with bench runs, door swing, heater position, glass and clearances, plus wall sections showing insulation, vapor barrier and paneling build-up.

Heater and electrical spec

Calculated output, model, control type, circuit size and the run back to the panel, with any capacity issue identified before it becomes a change order.

Ventilation design

Intake and exhaust positions and sizes, and how they interact with the door and any window. This is the part most sets leave blank and most rooms miss.

Materials schedule

Wood species by location, bench and backrest stock, door type, hardware, lighting, and the accessories that will be fitted at handover.

What Affects the Cost of Custom Sauna Design

Design is priced as its own scope, and what moves it is:

  • Scope of the room. A single indoor conversion draws faster than an outdoor structure with a foundation, roof and site work.
  • Permit involvement. Drawings intended for submission need more detail than drawings intended for your own builder.
  • Number of revisions. Two rounds are included; large changes of direction take more.
  • Site complexity. Grade, access, panel distance and coastal review all add survey and drafting time.

The design fee is credited in full against the build if we go on to build it for you, whichever of the rooms on our San Luis Obispo sauna builder list it turns out to be.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hire a professional sauna builder in the US?

Nationally, professional sauna work is usually quoted as a package rather than an hourly rate, and the spread is wide: a straightforward indoor conversion in an existing framed space sits well below a purpose-built outdoor cabin with a foundation and a trenched circuit. Wood species and heater choice move the number as much as square footage does. Here on the Central Coast we quote flat-rate after a site visit, so the figure you approve includes design, materials, labor and permits rather than a base price with extras discovered later.

Can I hire you for design only?

Yes. Plenty of clients want the engineering settled and the drawings in hand, whether they are building it themselves, using their own contractor, or simply getting a straight comparison between bids. You own the drawings. If you later decide to have us build it, the design fee comes off the build price.

How long does the design phase take?

Usually one to three weeks from the site visit to a set you are happy with, depending on how many revisions the room needs and how quickly samples and heater lead times come back. Permit-ready sets take a little longer because the detail level is higher.

Will you design around a kit I have already bought?

Often, yes. We will measure the kit against the space, tell you honestly whether it fits, and design the surrounding work: the base or pad, the electrical, the venting, the deck or the enclosure. If the kit is genuinely wrong for the room we will say so before you spend money making it fit.

Do I need drawings to get a permit?

For an outdoor structure or any framing change, yes. A straightforward electrical permit for a heater in an existing room needs less. We prepare whatever the City of San Luis Obispo or County Planning & Building requires for your particular scope and file it ourselves.
